Have you ever wondered why some reading lessons are structured the way they are? Or why learning to read is easier or harder for different students? The simple answer is that reading is a complicated mental task. In this session, we will examine the underlying skills needed to read proficiently. We will also discuss the kinds of instruction needed to achieve this proficiency (but will not go into any particular instructional practice).

In this session we will:
  • Study two models of reading, Scarborough's Reading Rope and The Simple View of Reading, which help us understand the underlying skills needed to read proficiently
  • Discuss implications for learning and instruction when students need additional support with one or more of these underlying skills
  • Examine current brain imaging and the Four-Part Processor model which demonstrate what's happening in our brains when we read proficiently.
