The consistent practice of rooting our responses to students’ behavior in punitive and authoritative responses is a practice we need to address and explore in education. Children who carry chronic behavioral challenges are often met with reactive and punitive practices that can potentially reactivate the developing stress response system. In this session, we will shift the focus from compliance and control to connection and healing, through disciplinary and relational practices that are rooted in neuroscience, empathy and compassion. Foundational to this session is the work of Lori L. Desautels, a higher educational researcher and professor at Butler University and her work “Connections Over Compliance: Rewiring Our Perceptions of Discipline.” This work is based in neuroscience research and educational practices to give all lead learners the tools to lean into student behavior as communication with care, compassion and connection at the center.

After this session you will:
  • Have an understanding of the neurobiology of trauma
  • View behaviors as unmet needs
  • Use these lenses to develop effective interventions
  • Learn practical strategies to use to regulate with your students.
