English spelling is not disordered or chaotic. It's just a system designed to favor meaning and word history over letter/sound correspondence. Once you understand the basic principles of English word building you will be able to better explain to students why spellings that seem random actually do have a reason behind them. In this session, we will:
  • Examine why English spelling is the way it is from a historical and linguistic viewpoint
  • Learn about the main elements of English spelling - bases, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Practice word building with word matrix and word sums
  • Study the 6 syllable types and how those can be used to help students learn common English spelling patterns
  • Practice syllable division as a way to teach reading of long, multisyllabic words
  • Examine common, dependable English spelling patterns
