Connection over Compliance
Thursday August 15, 2024 8:30am - 11:30am PDT
TBA
The consistent practice of rooting our responses to students’ behavior in punitive and authoritative responses is a practice we need to address and explore in education. Children who carry chronic behavioral challenges are often met with reactive and punitive practices that can potentially reactivate the developing stress response system. In this session, we will shift the focus from compliance and control to connection and healing, through disciplinary and relational practices that are rooted in neuroscience, empathy and compassion. Foundational to this session is the work of Lori L. Desautels, a higher educational researcher and professor at Butler University and her work “Connections Over Compliance: Rewiring Our Perceptions of Discipline.” This work is based in neuroscience research and educational practices to give all lead learners the tools to lean into student behavior as communication with care, compassion and connection at the center.

After this session you will:
  • Have an understanding of the neurobiology of trauma
  • View behaviors as unmet needs
  • Use these lenses to develop effective interventions
  • Learn practical strategies to use to regulate with your students.

Models of Reading and How Our Brains Learn to Read
Thursday August 15, 2024 8:30am - 11:30am PDT
TBA
Have you ever wondered why some reading lessons are structured the way they are? Or why learning to read is easier or harder for different students? The simple answer is that reading is a complicated mental task. In this session, we will examine the underlying skills needed to read proficiently. We will also discuss the kinds of instruction needed to achieve this proficiency (but will not go into any particular instructional practice).

In this session we will:
  • Study two models of reading, Scarborough's Reading Rope and The Simple View of Reading, which help us understand the underlying skills needed to read proficiently
  • Discuss implications for learning and instruction when students need additional support with one or more of these underlying skills
  • Examine current brain imaging and the Four-Part Processor model which demonstrate what's happening in our brains when we read proficiently.

Asset Based Literacy Instruction for Multilingual and Multidialectal Learners
Thursday August 15, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
Students who are learning English already have a wealth of language. We are just helping them add to what they already possess. Similarly, students who speak English dialects such as African American English are already proficient in English. We are just helping them add proficiency in another dialect of English.

In this session, we will lean heavily on the Language Comprehension domain of the Reading Rope model and examine how to use students’ linguistic assets as a bridge for new learning. We will:
  • Examine and discuss the elements of language
  • Examine the sound systems (phonologies) of languages commonly spoken school districts in Multnomah County
  • Discuss dialects and the role of power in the status given to languages and dialects
  • Look at some practical ways to use what students already know about language to support them as they add English (or another dialect of English)

In this session, we will:
  • Examine why English spelling is the way it is from a historical and linguistic viewpoint
  • Learn about the main elements of English spelling - bases, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Practice word building with word matrix and word sums
  • Study the 6 syllable types and how those can be used to help students learn common English spelling patterns
  • Practice syllable division as a way to teach reading of long, multisyllabic words
  • Examine common, dependable English spelling patterns

Trauma Informed Care in Practice
Friday August 16, 2024 8:30am - 11:30am PDT
TBA
The impacts of trauma manifests in individuals, classrooms and schools in a myriad of ways. Understanding how trauma impacts neurobiology and brain development is essential for all educators in order to respond with appropriate interventions. In this session we will learn about the autonomic nervous system, and how it reacts and responds to trauma and stress. With a solid foundation of what trauma is, we will then explore practical, creative strategies to move beyond mere understanding to actively creating an environment conducive to healing, connection, and learning.
In this session we will:
  •  Explore practical strategies to address and meet the needs of trauma-affected students within the school environment.
  •  Learn how to develop and apply tools that foster a sense of safety, trust, and support in the classroom.
  •  Engage in self-reflection regarding your own reaction to stress and how this shows up in your work with students
  • Learn and practice a variety of regulation strategies that you can use with your students, or for your own wellbeing!

Common Diagnoses, Behavior Support, and Self-Awareness from a Mental Health Lens
Friday August 16, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
Do you support students with big behaviors and complex diagnoses and wish you knew more about supporting them from a therapeutic approach that actually makes sense? Paraeducators are in the unique position of forming close relationships and offering support to students who often have complex mental health diagnoses. In this workshop, we will review some of the most common diagnoses we see in schools (ADHD, Autism, Depression, Anxiety, Communication Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, etc.) from a student-centered lens and discuss how to make our relationships, interventions, and school accommodations stronger. We will review what paraeducators have control over and how to be aware of our own responses and triggers, all from an approach that centers student strengths and autonomy, as well as how your self-awareness and self-regulation can have a life-changing effect on your work and relationships.

Three Early Literacy Instructional Practices (phoneme blending, irregular words, handwriting)
Friday August 16, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
If you have participated in our Intro to Science of Reading series, particularly sessions 5 & 6, this is an extension of what we practiced in the structured literacy lessons. We will go deeper into instructional routines we touched on in those sessions.
Participation in the previous sessions is not required, though. If you teach literacy with small groups, especially K - 2nd, this session could be helpful for you. It's a grab bag of valuable instructional routines which are most commonly skipped for various reasons, most often time constraints.
In this session, we will examine and practice:
  • Letter formation
    • Writing letters by hand is an integral part of learning letter/sound correspondences. It is also the best way to avoid ongoing confusion of identically shaped letters such as b/d.
    • Using a verbal pathway and kinesthetic input to learn and practice letter formation supports all learners.
  • Phoneme (sound) blending
    • This is crucial to students' reading success. We'll examine basic classroom instruction in phoneme blending and also techniques to use when we need to provide students more support with this skill.
  • Irregular words
    • Most English spellings follow common spelling patterns. And even those with unexpected spellings are still mostly phonetic. We'll look at the "heart method" for teaching irregularly spelled words.

Three Early Literacy Instructional Practices (phoneme blending, irregular words, handwriting)
Monday August 19, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
If you have participated in our Intro to Science of Reading, particularly sessions 5 & 6, this is an extension of what we practiced in the structured literacy lessons.

Asset Based Literacy Instruction for Multilingual and Multidialectal Learners
Wednesday August 21, 2024 8:30am - 11:30am PDT

Wednesday August 21, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT

Models of Reading and How Our Brains Learn to Read
Wednesday August 21, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT

English Spelling
Thursday August 22, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
English spelling is not disordered or chaotic. It's just a system designed to favor meaning and word history over letter/sound correspondence. Once you understand the basic principles of English word building you will be able to better explain to students why spellings that seem random actually do have a reason behind them.

Thursday August 22, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
